Google Cloud has announced Gemini agent, which it calls a single, “universal agent for work.” Unveiled by Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian at the Gemini at Work 2026 event on October 8, the agent can answer questions, handle knowledge work, create media and write and run code from one place. It is in private preview for now, with wider availability promised “soon” for Workspace customers on select Business and Enterprise plans.
What changed
| Detail | What Google announced |
|---|---|
| Where it works | Gemini Enterprise app, Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Chat and Calendar, plus Slack, Microsoft 365, the command line and an API |
| Models | Picks the best model for each job, currently from the Gemini and Claude families; other models are planned |
| Long tasks | Splits work across sub-agents that can run for hours or days |
| Availability | Private preview; wider rollout “soon” for select Workspace Business and Enterprise plans |
| Price | Not announced |
- Objectives, not instructions: Google says you can give the agent a goal and let it plan the steps.
- @Gemini in your files: you can mention Gemini in Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides and Chat, and Workspace can suggest handing off a task, such as a slide deck your manager asked for, in one click.
- Scheduling: 9to5Google reports it can set up meetings by pulling participants from chats and past threads, checking calendars and emailing outside guests.
- Agents as coworkers: MarkTechPost reports agents can get their own account with an email address, calendar and Drive, and only see what is shared with them.
What it means for you
For now this is a business story: there is no consumer version, no public price and no general availability date. If your employer uses Google Workspace, this is the direction your Gmail and Docs are heading, with Gemini doing more of the multi-step work instead of only drafting text. It is also notable that Google is routing some jobs to Anthropic’s Claude models, a sign that the big AI providers are mixing and matching models rather than relying on one.
Canadian organizations should wait for Google to publish pricing and regional availability before planning around it. Workspace is billed per user, so watch whether Gemini agent ends up in existing plans or as a paid add-on, and remember GST/HST applies on top. IT teams will also want to review its data access rules, since the agent works across email, calendars and files.
