Is Claude Free? What the Free Plan Includes in 2026

Independent review: we don't accept payment for reviews, scores or rankings. How we test

Tested on a free account and checked against Anthropic’s pricing and help pages, October 22, 2026 · By David Smith

Short answer: yes, Claude is free. Anyone can use Claude on the web, desktop and phone without paying. The free plan includes web search, file creation and code, memory, voice mode, connectors and up to 5 projects. What you don’t get for free is Claude Code, Claude in Chrome, Research and the top Opus models, and the usage limit is lower than on paid plans.

We tried Claude Free (October 22, 2026)

We used a free Claude account from Canada on the web app. Here’s what we saw.

What we checkedWhat happened
ModelsSonnet 5.5 (default) and Haiku 5.5. Opus 5.5 and Fable 5.1 show an “Upgrade” label
Web searchWorked. Claude searched, answered and linked its sources
Message limit42 short messages in one chat, no limit message
Upgrade promptsA “Use Opus 5.5 with Claude Pro” pop-up appeared after a few messages; “Not now” closes it
Usage pageLocked: “Usage settings are only available on Pro and Max plans”
Price shown in CanadaPro C$28/month, Max from C$140/month
Claude free plan model menu: Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 available, Opus 5.5 and Fable 5.1 locked
The model menu on our free account: Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 work, Opus 5.5 and Fable 5.1 need an upgrade.

Our 42 messages were one-line requests, so they used very little. A long PDF or a big coding chat will reach the limit much sooner, and we can’t give you a number for that.

Web search on the free plan: Claude ran the search and listed its sources.

One thing to know: when we asked Claude itself for the Canadian price, it couldn’t find it and quoted a third-party estimate of about C$27.50. The real price, shown on the upgrade page in the app, is C$28.

How the free limit works

Claude doesn’t give free users a fixed number of messages. Usage is measured per session, and the limit resets on a rolling five-hour window. How fast you reach it depends on the model, the length of your chats and the files you attach: a short question uses far less than a long document.

When you hit the limit, Claude tells you when you can continue. Anthropic says Pro gives more usage per session than Free; its pricing page puts it at at least five times more.

Tip for Canadians: subscribe on the web, not in the iPhone app. Pro yearly is C$19.99 cheaper on the web, and Max starts C$39.99 a month lower. Monthly Pro costs the same in both places. How to get more out of Claude Free

  • Start new chats for new topics. Long conversations use more of your limit with every message.
  • Paste only the part you need instead of a whole document.
  • Use projects (up to 5) to keep instructions and files in one place, so you don’t repeat them.
  • Plan around the five-hour reset: if you hit the limit in the morning, you can continue later the same day.

Claude Free vs ChatGPT Free

Both are free on web and mobile, with web search and voice. ChatGPT Free also has a built-in image generator; Claude doesn’t offer one like it. In our October test, a free ChatGPT account made 18 images without a limit message. For the full comparison, see ChatGPT vs Claude and Is ChatGPT free?.

FAQ

Is Claude completely free?

Yes, the Free plan costs nothing and doesn’t need a credit card. It has a usage limit that resets every five hours, and some features, such as Claude Code and Opus models, need a paid plan.

Does Claude Free have a daily message limit?

Not a fixed daily number. Usage is counted per session and resets on a rolling five-hour window. Longer chats and big files use the limit faster.

Can I use Claude Code for free?

No. Claude Code is included with Pro and Max, not with the Free plan.

How much is Claude Pro in Canada?

C$28 a month, or C$280 a year, when you buy on the web (checked October 22, 2026), plus sales tax. In the iPhone app the yearly plan costs C$299.99. In the U.S. Pro is US$20 a month.
