Tested October 15, 2026, on free accounts. Limits change often, so treat these numbers as a snapshot, not a promise.
Every AI company says its image generator is “free”. We wanted to know what that means in practice, so we opened free accounts on ChatGPT, Gemini, Ideogram and Grok and kept asking for images until each one told us to stop or pay. We used new prompts throughout: a bicycle, a snowy cabin, a robot in a greenhouse, a bowl of ramen, a puppy and more.
The result: ChatGPT was the most generous by far, with 18 images and no limit in sight. Ideogram gave 8, Gemini 6 and Grok 5.
The scoreboard
| Rank | Tool | Free images | What stopped us | Images per prompt |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | ChatGPT | 18 | Nothing. We stopped the test ourselves | 1 |
| 2 | Ideogram | 8 | Out of credits: “Upgrade to create” | 4 |
| 3 | Gemini | 6 | “I can create more images as soon as your limit resets” | 1 |
| 4 | Grok | 5 | “High Demand” in chat, then a paywall in Imagine | 1 in chat, 2 in Imagine |
| — | Grok without an account | 0 | Asks you to sign up | — |
ChatGPT
Eighteen images on a free account, each in about 25 to 50 seconds, with no warning or limit message. If you need a lot of images without paying, start here.
How we tested
- One free account per tool. No paid trials and no credits bought.
- A different prompt for each new request, mixing photos, paintings, 3D renders and illustrations. Two small exceptions are noted below.
- We counted only images that actually appeared on screen, and stopped when a tool refused, showed a paywall or blocked the send button.
- We also tried Microsoft Copilot, Meta AI and Leonardo, but couldn’t run a fair test this time, so they’re not ranked.
1. ChatGPT: 18 images and still going

ChatGPT answered 17 prompts with 18 images (the last prompt came back with two versions), each in about 25 to 50 seconds. There was still no limit message when we stopped. One image was a 4-panel picture: four of our prompts got merged into one message by mistake, and we counted it as one image.
Quality held up across the whole run, from food photos to digital art. Full details and more images: ChatGPT free image limit.
2. Ideogram: 8 images, but only 2 prompts

Our new free account started with 30 credits. With the default Ideogram 4.5 model, each prompt cost 12 credits and gave back 4 images. Two prompts later, the 6 leftover credits weren’t enough and “Upgrade to create” popped up (Plus: US$15 a month).
More pictures per prompt, far fewer prompts. Ideogram is still the pick when you need clean text in an image. More: Is Ideogram free?
3. Gemini: 6 images, then a 5-hour wait

Gemini made 6 images: three accuracy tests (an exact fruit count, a shop sign with text, a two-colour logo) plus three takes on one coffee-shop prompt. Every new prompt after that got: “I can create more images as soon as your limit resets.” The reset was about 5 hours away. Google says free usage is based on computing power, refreshes every five hours and has a weekly cap.
Gemini was the most accurate of the four on small details. More: Gemini free image limit.

4. Grok: 5 images, and you need an account

Logged out, Grok made no images at all. With a free account, Grok chat made 1 image and then replied “High Demand: Grok is under heavy usage right now… upgrade your plan to get priority access”. Grok’s separate Imagine page did better: 2 images per prompt for 2 prompts, then an “Unlock your creativity with Imagine” paywall. Total: 5. Grok Plus was CA$9.99 a month on that paywall. Same prompt, different AI
Some prompts went to more than one tool, which gave us a fair side-by-side. The bicycle looked like a photo in all three tools. For the robot, ChatGPT made the cute toy-like robot we asked for, while Grok made a moodier retro one. For the ramen, only ChatGPT followed “overhead”; Grok shot it from the side. ChatGPT won or tied every round.
