Apple has signed a deal to hire staff from Huxe and license its technology. Huxe was a small AI audio startup founded by three former members of Google’s NotebookLM team. It is not a full acquisition: according to a European Commission filing, Apple can make job offers to some Huxe employees and gets a non-exclusive licence to Huxe’s intellectual property.

Why it matters

NotebookLM (now called Gemini Notebook) became famous for turning documents into two-host audio conversations. Huxe’s founders took that idea further with daily briefings made from your own inbox and calendar. Apple has not said how it will use the technology, but the obvious fits are Siri, Apple Podcasts and Apple News, where spoken summaries would compete directly with Google’s audio overviews.

This is also the latest “licence and hire” deal in AI. Big tech companies increasingly take a startup’s people and a licence to its technology instead of buying the company outright, which can mean a lighter regulatory review.

What it means for you

Nothing changes today: Huxe is already shut down and Apple has announced no new feature. If you want AI audio summaries now, Gemini Notebook and ChatGPT’s voice mode already do a version of this. See our best AI note-taker and best AI voice generator guides.
