Anthropic has launched Claude for Google Workspace in public beta, putting Claude in a sidebar inside Google Docs, Sheets and Slides where it can read and edit the file you have open. The add-on, announced on October 6, is available on all paid Claude plans. Anthropic also added beta connectors that let you create and edit Google files straight from a Claude chat.
What changed
| App | What Claude can do |
|---|---|
| Google Docs | Edit sentences and headings in place while keeping formatting; bigger changes come as suggestion cards you apply or dismiss |
| Google Sheets | Write formulas, build pivot tables and native charts, add tabs, and clean or join data with Python |
| Google Slides | Build slides from the deck’s own layouts and theme, then check for overlapping, off-slide or hard-to-read text |
- You stay in control: the default “Ask before edits” mode shows each change for approval; “Accept all edits” lets Claude work through a task without stopping.
- Same Claude account: the sidebar uses the same models, connectors and skills as your Claude account, so it can pull in context from other connected apps.
- Permissions: Claude can only reach files your Google sharing settings already allow.
- How to get it: install the add-on from the Google Workspace Marketplace, then open a file and choose Extensions > Claude > Open Claude. On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner must enable the connectors first, and Workspace admins may need to approve Claude as a trusted app.
What it means for you
If you pay for Claude and live in Google Docs or Sheets, you no longer have to copy text back and forth between tabs. Claude can now fix a report, build a pivot table or tidy a slide deck in the file itself. It also puts Claude in direct competition with Gemini, which Google already builds into Workspace.
Keep in mind it is a beta: Anthropic warns some features may be limited or unreliable, and Reworked notes the connector asks for full read, write and delete access to your files at setup. Leave “Ask before edits” on for important documents. Nothing changes in price for Canadian subscribers: the add-on is included with paid Claude plans, which are billed in USD (about 1.36 to the Canadian dollar) with GST/HST where it applies.
